What is Weighted GPA?
Weighted GPA gives you extra grade points for taking challenging courses like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Honors classes. Instead of a 4.0 maximum, weighted GPA typically uses a 5.0 scale or higher.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
Regular Class (Unweighted)
An A in a regular class = 4.0 points
AP/IB/Honors (Weighted)
An A in an AP class = 5.0 points
Why Weighted GPA Matters
- Shows colleges you challenged yourself with rigorous coursework
- Can boost your class rank and improve scholarship opportunities
- Demonstrates college readiness through advanced courses
- Many competitive colleges expect to see weighted GPAs above 4.0
Pro Tip:
Colleges recalculate your GPA using their own methods, but taking AP/IB/Honors classes shows academic rigor regardless of weighting.
